That means when you refer someone who buys the products, you get a cut. The main nutrients in the supplement, niacin, and chromium, have long been sold as metabolism-boosters, but the evidence that they actually work just isn’t there. Niacin, Melton explains, is a B vitamin that does support metabolism—but you can get the same calorie-burning perks from eating fruits, veggies, whole grains, and nuts.
And even though there have been many claims that chromium supplements can reduce body fat and increase lean muscle, “there’s been no significant benefit found in over 24 studies,” says Melton. This 35-calorie post-exercise supplement “supports hydration and faster recovery” with vitamins, electrolytes, and a glycogen complex (i.e., eight grams of various forms of sugar: fructose, dextrose, evaporated cane juice, and honey powder). While “you do need carbs and protein when you work out, you can just eat fruit to get the same level of nutrients,” says Melton.
That way you’ll also get a dose of appetite-sating fiber, so you’re not just downing straight sugar. Dairy, Melton says, actually contains a significant amount of carbs—so she recommends eating a cup of yogurt post-workout for a dose of energy plus muscle-building whey protein. However, she adds that most people don’t sweat enough during workouts to worry about replacing lost electrolytes.
For those who need a little help getting things going, Melton says there are plenty of gentle over-the-counter products with fiber and milk of magnesia you can take to get things going instead of an expensive supplement. “If it’s a big problem, you need to see your doctor,” she says.
To stay regular, Melton recommends drinking lots of water and getting plenty of fiber in your diet from fruits, veggies, beans, and lentils. Exercise—even just a walk around the block—also gets things moving. Melton adds that it’s easy to overdo it with laxative products, which can lead to dehydration. Melton. But you’re better off mastering a list of simple recipes and spending your money on high-quality lean protein, dairy, fruits, and veggies. “I don’t agree with using these products. They’re way overpriced for what you’re getting,” she says. She adds that medications can interact with herbal products and “have a negative impact on health.

I thought I was doing better having lost and kept off 70 lbs for about 5 years, until I encountered some severe life changing incidents that took me off my focus. Since then I have gain all the 70 back plus about 15 more. The doctor recently told me that I need to loose weight and the test show I am borderline diabetic. I know if I can just get it under control, I will feel better, but wanting and doing are two different things.
