If you’re alive in 2018 and have access to the Internet (or a bookstore, or a supermarket), chances are, you've heard about Whole30. In a nutshell, Whole30 is a 30-day elimination diet that entirely cuts out grains, legumes (beans, lentils, peanuts, etc.), soy, dairy, added sugars, and processed foods. Oh, and no booze, either. Anyone on the Whole30 will spend 30 days eating tons of fresh veggies, meat, seafood, fruit, eggs, nuts, seeds, and certain oils.


You can find the official program rules here. That's because it is. Eliminating entire food groups is hard, and most experts recommend that you don't do it. For one thing, the Whole30 makes grains, legumes, and dairy off-limits, while both the USDA dietary guidelines and the American Heart Association dietary guidelines recommend all three of these as part of a healthy diet.

That said, both R.D.s agree that there are some benefits of the super popular diet, like cooking more often and reducing your intake of added sugar, processed food, and alcohol.


“It does teach people how to prep and cook their own food, so that's great for people who are used to buying most of their meals from restaurants,” Langer says. “It also focuses on whole foods, meaning that it cuts a lot of the junk food from people’s diets. “Cooking meals is the best way to ensure you’re following this program because you have control over what goes into your meals,” Yeung says.

They store their favorite recipes.
